The Freetown Police department is a non civil-service agency comprised of 17 full-time police officers and a number of part-time reserve officers. Full-time vacancies are infrequent.

Periodically, a list will be established to fill full-time vacancies. The process involves the administering of a written examination to prospective candidates. The evaluation score is combined with points earned for desirable qualifications (e.g., law enforcement experience, Freetown auxiliary and reserve officer experience, etc.) to determine those officers who will proceed to the interview phase. Candidates who are called for the interview phase are scored and a list of eligible candidates is then established.
